SYNOPSIS/PLOT:
TWILIGHT is an action-packed, modern day love story between a vampire and a human. Highlighted by award-caliber performances by two of Hollywood’s most acclaimed actors, this intimate HBO Films drama tells the hypothetical, behind-the-scenes story of tobacco heiress Doris Duke and her Irish butler Bernard Lafferty, showing how their relationship could have morphed from a strict employee-employer contract into something much deeper. As the film speculates, after arriving at the doorstep of Duke’s mansion in 1987, Bernard slowly earned his way into the heiress’ confidence, becoming her confidante and flamboyant companion at home and on trips, all while handling the affairs of her household. Their bond became so strong that it even survived Bernard’s relapse into alcohol abuse, during which he was forced to take a sabbatical to go into rehab. By the time Duke died in 1993, Bernard was back at her side, remaining her most trusted advisor and dearest friend, despite skepticism about his financial motives from businessmen, lawyers and doctors in her inner circle.
A fictional drama that explores a relationship which took place primarily behind closed doors, Bernard and Doris offers an intriguing scenario that might explain how Doris Duke – the world-famous heiress and socialite who controlled a billion-dollar empire – might have decided to give posthumous control of her fortune to Bernard Lafferty, a homosexual and alcoholic who had been her personal butler for only six years.
Money, class and sexuality are among the issues explored in the movie, but at its core, Bernard and Doris is the imagined story of an extraordinary and intimate relationship between two real-life individuals who don’t appear to fit into each other’s worlds. While Duke’s decision to name Lafferty her estate executor may have been the subject of multiple lawsuits and headlines, Bernard and Doris reaches beyond this sensationalism to render a witty, endearing tale about the unconventional, private bond between a society “princess” and her flawed-but-devoted “pauper” of a butler.

The Gran Torino brings his shy teenaged neighbor Thao into his life when Hmong gangbangers pressure the boy into trying to steal it. But Walt stands in the way of both the heist and the gang, making him the reluctant hero of the neighborhood–especially to Thao’s mother and older sister, Sue, who insist that Thao work for Walt as a way to make amends. Though he initially wants nothing to do with these people, Walt eventually gives in and puts the boy to work fixing up the neighborhood, setting into motion an unlikely friendship that will change both their lives.

SYNOPSIS/PLOT:
Jim Graham (Christian Bale), who ages from nine to twelve during the course of the story, is a brilliant and precocious boy with a fascination for Japanese airplanes. Jim lives with his rich British parents in the suburbs of Shanghai, where he was born.
It is 1941 and the Japanese have invaded China, prompting its fifteen thousand British residents to attempt flight from the country. Jim is separated from his parents during chaos in the crowded streets. After spending many days vainly awaiting their return home, he ventures through the city and falls in with Basie (John Malkovich), an American “operator.” They wind up in a Japanese internment camp. There Jim uses what he learns from Basie, top dog in the American adult quarters, to become a first-rate hustler and scavenger. If anybody (adult or child) wants anything, (food, cigarettes, et al), s/he comes to Jim. Jim is fascinated by the Japanese planes and pilots, on an airfield which he and other prisoners have built. When the field is attacked by Americans, he becomes excited by the activity in the air. He stands in the open, crazily shouting praise at the warring planes. When he comes to his senses, Jim cries because he doesn’t know what his parents look like anymore. With the war drawing to an end, the freed prisoners begin a mass exodus. Many die of hunger. Jim returns to the camp. Basie and other scavengers turn up. When they kill a young Japanese flier Jim has befriended, he turns against Basie. American soldiers arrive and the confused boy SURRENDERS to them. His parents discover him at a children’s camp. He comes out of his near-trance and hugs them.
